An original member of the Group of Seven, and considered one of Canada’s premier watercolourists, Franklin Carmichael’s most enduring and characteristic contributions to the medium appeared in the final decade of his life. In 1935 he built a family cottage in the Algoma region of Ontario, north of Lake Huron in the La Cloche Mountains. In his paintings from this region, especially in the watercolours he produced outdoors, Carmichael pays close attention to the interplay of atmosphere and meteorological conditions and the effects of light and shadow. Carmichael secured an indelible mark on watercolour painting in this country when, in 1925, he helped found the Canadian Society for Painters in Watercolour.
