In the 1950s Tony Tascona was painting semi-abstractly, using organic forms and a gestural approach. While working in Manitoba’s aviation industry in the early 1960s, he began experimenting with synthetic industrial paints and surfaces, like aluminium. His painting underwent additional transformations in the mid-1960s when, influenced by hard-edge painters while working in Montreal, his technique became increasingly composed of crisply delineated bands of colour. Arrow Dynamics is an early example of Tascona’s mature style. The painted surface is a glossy metallic skein that coats the picture plane, rendering the painting almost sculptural.
