Although born in Ontario, Edmund Morris spent five years in Winnipeg when his father was Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba from 1872 to 1877. These formative years on the Prairies influenced the artist’s approach to painting, and as an adult he returned to the subject. The WAG painting reveals Morris’s debt to the stylistic developments he embraced as an art student in Paris and New York City, including the rich palette and tonalities of the Barbizon School and the energized brushwork of the Impressionists. Financially independent, Morris dedicated much of his time to supporting professional artist associations with the goal of increasing exhibition opportunities and improving the public reception of art in Canada. He helped establish the Canadian Art Club in 1907.
