Ian Wallace has played a major role in the devel-opment of conceptual art in Canada. Summer Script I is a significant transition piece in Wallace’s career that marked the beginning of his photomurals. The original concept of the work came out of his collaboration on a film about marriage with fellow Vancouver photo-based conceptual artists Jeff Wall and Rodney Graham. Although the film was never completed, the stills from the videotape used in the trial stage of the film form the basis of this work as well as the continuation of this piece, Summer Script II (also in the WAG collection). From these stills a new narrative was constructed from rearranged sequences of the original action.
