Japanese-born Akio Takamori apprenticed with a master folk potter in Japan before continuing his formal studies in ceramics in the United States in the 1970s. Now working out of Seattle, his works explore both vessel-making and sculpture. Leda and the Swan is indicative of the reintroduction of the figure into his practice in the mid-1990s. The strong graphic quality of the work is emphasized by the use of minimal colour with heavy, bold outlines. Areas of concentrated energy, conveyed by concentric circles or repeated geometric forms, are countered by the overall intimate, gentle rhythm of the two entwined figures, sensuously wrapping the contours of the vessel.
