Throughout her extensive and impressive career, Betty Goodwin’s poetic and aesthetic concerns have been consistent, reflecting her preoccupation with the manifest or implied presence of the body. This sculpture expands upon this concern by playing upon the tension between human presence and absence; that is, sender and receiver. The work emphasizes aspects of dissociation and discontinuity by referencing corridors and enclosures. This barrier between the speaker and listener evokes a frustrating emotion of disconnection, unrealized potential, and even isolation.
