MakerLab: Tiny Inspirations

We'll be using BPA free, food grade silicone. Receive step by step instructions from Erica Lo, owner of Tiny Inspirations, a local teething accessories company .

MakerLab: L&R Studio

Lisa Schroeder of L&R Studio teaches you the skills necessary to hand build two ceramic pinch pot planters based on their popular “Pot Head” designs. You will create a wall planter and a stand-alone planter. Familiar with adding modelled elements to her own work, Lisa will be instructing participants on how to add faces (or whatever else!) to their planters. Give your plants a new home!
Planters will be available for pick up 2 weeks after the MakerLab.

Ages 14 and up. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Campers will explore the gallery exhibitions, create art with professional artists, go on exciting field trips, and stage their own mini-exhibition at the end of the week. Free pizza on Friday.

(Ages 6-10) Flying with Chagall

Up up and away!  Get inspired by the works of Chagall and create your own magnificent dreamscape.  Children can be inspired by two spectacular and colourful exhibitions at the WAG featuring the works of the famous artist Marc Chagall.  Children will use similar techniques as Chagall to create their own artwork inspired by Chagall.  Chagall’s work is often based on surrealism and so the children will explore this concept through fun and interactive games and art activities.  The field trip is to the Children’s Museum and to the WAG shop/workshop space at the Forks.  They will be bussed there and back on a private charter bus.  Every camp gets free pizza on Friday and a mini-exhibition of their artwork will be displayed to parents on Friday afternoon.  All camps go into WAG galleries at least twice during the week.

(Ages 6-10) Kicking it with Clay

Sculptures sculptures everywhere.  Take it all in and experiment with clay to make a fired work of art. Art class is run by Erika Hanneson a known professional clay artist.  They will be making a fired sculpture that they will also paint with true professional glazes.  They will have time on the clay wheel to experience that.  The field trip is to the Children’s Museum and to the new WAG shop/workshop space at the Forks. They will be bussed there and back with a charter school bus.  As with all camps, they have free pizza on Friday and a mini-exhibition of their work on Friday afternoon. All camps go into the WAG galleries at least twice to see sculptures and get inspired by the art.

(Ages 6-10) The Painted Selfie

Take a selfie like you never thought you could… and discover who you really are.  The selfie is really a contemporary portrait.  Kids will take a look at portraits in Gallery for inspiration and think about how selfies and portraiture is used today compared to the past.  They will think of their own personal attributes to include in their painting.  The kids will plan and execute a painting that will take them all week to make during their 2 hour daily art class.  Photography activities will be included outdoors and will be used to help inspire their selfie painting.  The field trip is to the Children’s Museum and to the WAG shop/workshop space at the Forks.  They will be bussed there and back on a private charter bus.  Every camp gets free pizza on Friday and a mini-exhibition of their artwork will be displayed to parents on Friday afternoon.  All camps go into WAG galleries at least twice during the week.

(Ages 11-15) Teen Mural Camp

Create a collaborative mural at the WAG Studio and make new friends.  Art class will be run by professional mural artist Michel St.Hilaire (Bilingual). The teens will create a mural on one of the interior walls of the WAG Studio building.  The teens will visit WAG exhibition to gain inspiration for their collaborative mural and they will also see slide shows of murals and visit murals in areas surrounding the WAG.  They will be involved in each step of creating the mural.  The field trip is a behind the scenes look at the Manitoba Theatre Centre back stage where they create the sets for the plays.  They will take the Free Spirit Downtown shuttle bus to go there and back.  They will visit the WAG exhibitions at least twice.  Free pizza on Friday and a reveal of their artwork will happen on Friday afternoon.  The teens will document the creation of their work as they make it.

Workshops are designed in conjunction with current exhibitions or to present media and techniques not covered in our regular classes. Students will view the work on display and work hands on with an instructor in the studio. This is a great opportunity to to stimulate ideas, explore a medium and deepen understanding of artists and their art.

Painting

Prerequisite: Drawing 1 or equivalent experience
This beginning course in acrylic painting introduces you to basic colour theory and handling of acrylic paints. You’ll work from still life arrangements, do colour exercises and learn about basic elements such as compotision and shpae, and how colour is used to create a sense of depth. Critiques will help you gain an understanding of what is involved in making a painting work well.

By focusing on colour while using media such as oil pastels, chalk pastels, art sticks and other materials, you will develop your ability to depict multiple aspects of nature. Child and teen classes are structured to accommodate the abilities of different age levels. These fun-filled classes develop skills in various media, fostering creativity and imagination. Artist instructors are paired with classes based on experience and area of specialization. Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions each consist of 10 classes on Saturdays or weekdays in the early evening.

(Ages 10-14) Animation

This course provides a beginners understanding of animation process and techniques. Students will work with claymation and then other styles of animation if time allows.   They will work on developing their own stories, characters, and designs to complete basic animation projects with emphasis placed on their individual creativity.  The course begins with some time spent on developing characters and backgrounds in order to eventually move to the animating stage of telling a short story.   Throughout the course a variety of animated films will be shown and discussed in order to deepen an understanding of animated film and what types of animation can be found, with emphasis on unique styles and techniques..  A DVD of students completed projects will be provided at the end of the session.
