WAG’S CENTENNIAL BALL RAISES $330,000!
Winnipeg, MB, October 25, 2012: The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Centennial Ball on October 20 was an outstanding success, raising over $330,000 in support of the Gallery’s art and learning programs for children and youth. Close to 500 guests at the black-tie event dined in the galleries, which were transformed by spectacular floral displays by the city’s leading floral designers, and extraordinary Centennial cakes created by top local pastry chefs. With flowers and cakes inspired by the art on display in the galleries, the result was a visual experience for the senses unlike Winnipeg has ever seen.
Hazel Borys, Chair of the Ball Committee, noted that “Fifty artists donated original works of art to the live and silent auctions, and many of them began their artistic careers by taking art classes at the WAG or visiting the Gallery as part of our school programs. Many of these Canadian artists are in galleries and private collections around the country and have been recognized with some of the highest honours internationally. They are a testament to what Winnipeggers’ support has and will continue to produce.”
Upon his arrival at the WAG in 2008, Executive Director Stephen Borys brought the WAG’s premier fundraising gala back to the Gallery’s premises in an effort to showcase the building and the art collections. Borys stated: “In our Centennial year, we received an unprecedented level of support from our corporate sponsors, the floral and cake designers who provided stunning creations to complement the art, and the dozens of individuals (including many artists) and companies who donated a wide array of items for the auctions. In particular I’d like to thank our raffle donors—Birks for a timeless Rolex watch, Wanda Koop for an impressive painting from her Seeway series, and The Fort Garry Hotel for a relaxing guest stay and a spa for eight people.”
Borys cited filmmaker Guy Maddin whose “hauntingly beautiful Séances project images” were projected on to the walls of the Gallery’s Eckhardt Hall and who happily signed limited edition prints from the project which were presented to the Ball guests. He also praised the hard work, initiative, and enthusiasm of the Ball Committee, all of them volunteers, and the WAG staff for working together to create a truly exceptional evening. “In the end, I don’t think there is another organization in the city that can throw a party with five centuries of art, thousands of flowers, and a Guy Maddin film montage as the décor!” Borys explained. “People noticed, people talked, and people want to come back; and that’s why we’re here — to serve our community and share with them the power of art.”
