Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier received critical acclaim after submitting his first work to the Paris Salon in 1834 at age 19. Initially trained as an engraver and illustrator, Meissonier later became a specialist in conversation pieces, producing small-scale pictures featuring popular genre scenes and costume dramas intended for domestic spaces. Highly popular among European collectors, his paintings feature elaborate interiors, with detailed furnishings and meticulously dressed subjects, capturing the elegance and charm of France in the late nineteenth century. The WAG picture shows an artist at work in his studio attended by three fashionably attired gentlemen who appear very interested in the work in progress on the easel.
