Painting, Canadian Modern (1910-1979)

Montreal painter Guido Molinari was originally drawn to the Surrealist and Expressionistic painting style of the Automatists. By the 1960s Molinari was part of a younger generation of Quebec artists who approached painting as an opportunity to use flat geometric forms, purged of subject matter and gestural brush strokes, to concentrate on the perceptual relationships between different hues and tones. Molinari used the vertically striped format of Seriel Bleu-Rose for close to two decades. The stripes of colour achieve their hard edge through the use of masking tape and fast-drying acrylic paint; paint rollers eliminate all signs of the artist’s hand. Molinari researched the optics of colour, and his stripes push and pull the viewer’s perceived spatial orientation, the colours receding and advancing, and their widths expanding and contracting.
