Installation, Canadian Contemporary (1980-present)

New media, performance, and installation artist Zachery Longboy literally hangs his life out to dry in this work. The main element of the installation is a stylized white tree that symbolizes both the tree of life as well as the artist’s own family tree. Two small video monitors sitting in the canopy display the artist’s earlier single channel works that address Longboy’s struggle regarding the poignant difference between himself and members of both his foster and biological families. Extending from the tree is a clothesline on which family snapshots are pinned. These images depict in a very personal and direct manner the duality of Longboy’s life—being part of two cultures (Aboriginal and Caucasian) and yet never fully accepted by either one.
