Sculpture, Canadian Contemporary (1980-present)

Consisting of 14 fired clay components arranged as an installation, Multiples speaks to the similarities and differences that characterize contemporary Canadian society. Stubbs’ work often expresses the continuity of human life and her desire for understanding among people of different cultural histories. The sturdy, mushroom-like forms of Multiples are in contrast to the inherent fragility of clay, paralleling the strength and vulnerability of the human condition. Each pod was made by pounding clay into a plaster mold and then manipulating each to create different, individual forms. Recognized for her bronze and ceramic sculpture of the human figure, this substantial and abstract work also retains references to the body. Collectively the pods take on the shape of an ancient formation of disembodied heads.
