Delpy studied with two masters of the landscape tradition, Charles François Daubigny and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He became a devoted landscape painter and was inspired to create luminous and often romanticized visions from nature. A painter of colour and light, Delpy worked and exhibited regularly with Monet, Sisley, and Renoir. During the 1860s, he visited Corot in Ville d’Avray, a short distance from Paris, where he likely painted this evening landscape. The nostalgic and timeless sunset view features a vast marshland inhabited by two peasant workers and an ox minutely rendered along the shore of the lake.
