Employing a large Polaroid camera for this work, Evergon pushes the medium of photography to its limits with true-to-life scale, sensuous detail, and saturated colour. This four-panel piece is a reinterpretation of the immense painting of the same title by the eighteenth-century Spanish artist Francisco Goya. In Goya’s painting, allusions to the manner in which superstitious beliefs were replaced by scientific facts during the Age of Enlightenment are evident. In this contemporary comment, Evergon plays on the dramatic oscillation between irrational fear and logical thought. In doing so, the piece also makes references to the AIDS epidemic.
