This image depicts a group of men reclining around a raised blazing hearth in a hunting lodge. Hall, an Oxford-educated Englishman, recorded important aspects of life in western Canada during the 1870s and 1880s. He is perhaps best known for documenting the inaugural trip taken by the Governor General, the Marquess of Lorne, in 1881 through the Canadian Northwest. Informal original watercolours and sketches like this one were often reproduced as wood engravings and published in the British illustrated newspaper The Graphic. A print reproduction of Moose Hunting in Canada appears in the February 22, 1879, issue of that periodical.
