Joe Fafard

For four decades Joe Fafard has created a body of work that has found a permanent place in people's hearts and minds. His subject matter ranges from common farm animals to public and historical figures, including Pierre Trudeau, Crowfoot, Emily Carr, and Vincent van Gogh. His work unifies diverse aspects of our society—urban and rural values; French, English, and Aboriginal relations; heroism and humour in everyday life. Fafard's work is regionally rooted yet universal, standing as an example of art celebrated both critically and by the general public.

This retrospective exhibition traces the material and thematic development of Fafard's oeuvre. The 70 pieces in the exhibition range from his small and intimate early figurative sculptures to the elegant and monumental statuary of his later career, from caricature to portraiture and from the traditional to the humourous.

Joe Fafard has been organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the National Art Gallery of Canada. Organisée par la MacKenzie Art Gallery et le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada.
