Canada is Arts Nation

Authored by: WAG Staff on May 6, 2012

What do Deepa Mehta, Mary Walsh and Rush have in common? They are all recipients of this year's Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards, Canada's highest honour for the arts. Leading up to the event, the Foundation that administers the awards set itself an audacious goal that by Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, the whole country, indeed the whole world know Canada as Arts Nation. We are Arts Nation.

We began the year with Canadian artists claiming four of the top five albums on the Billboard charts.  The first Oscar of the season was presented to our own Christopher Plummer.  The simple truth is that the best known and most celebrated Canadians around the world are our artists; musicians, actors, writers, dancers, directors, choreographers, composers, broadcasters and filmmakers.  As a country we punch way above our weight in the arts.

Winnipeg and Manitoba are at the heart of Arts Nation. For our part, the WAG has been promoting art since 1912, and  continues to enrich, inspire, and engage. From our art classes for children that began in 1936 to our collection of contemporary Inuit art, we support Arts Nation in everything we do. Watch our own iconic building become an organic artistic installation for the summer months with Ewa Tarsia's Green ... Grass ... Dot ..., organized in collaboration with 5468796 Architecture and Helen Delacretaz, the WAG's Chief Curator.

Art - it's who we are. Via Facebook or Twitter, tell us why YOU think we are Arts Nation!
