WAG Talk on the Art of Fernando Botero
Born and raised in Colombia, Jairo Viafara is well acquainted with the work of Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Join him as he shares some of his personal reflections and thoughts about the artist in a talk on Thursday, February 3 at 7pm at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. A View from Afar: A Critical Review of Botero’s Work is included with general admission. ($5 surcharge applies for those wishing to visit The Baroque World of Fernando Botero).
Jairo Viafara offers personal interpretations of the artwork of Fernando Botero with a particular focus on Botero’s representations of Afro-Colombians and the Afro-Colombian experience.
Viafara’s talk will be in English, but the WAG is offering 2pm Spanish-language tours of the exhibition on Saturday, January 15, February 5, and February 19.
A Winnipegger since 1989, Viafara is currently a Research Associate at the Transport Institute, and a sessional lecturer at the Supply Chain Department at the Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and a Master’s degree in City Planning, University of Manitoba. Viafara is currently a Board member of Villa Rosa, and has worked in the past for several community organizations in Winnipeg including Greenpeace, The Coalition to Save the Elms, Afro-Caribbean Association of Manitoba, and the Colombian Association of Manitoba.
