Elizabeth Wyn Wood, a Toronto sculptor, is best known for her small-scale landscapes inspired by the Group of Seven. She produced Linda to express her feelings about the state of the human resolve and spirit during the Depression. The figure stands just over life-sized, relational to the viewer but, at the same time, physically imposing and powerful in stature. It was purchased directly from the artist by Bertram Brooker, who immediately donated it to the WAG; Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, Principal of the Winnipeg School of Art at the time, brokered the donation. According to Brooker, Wood ultimately intended to do a metal cast of Linda, likely in aluminum.
