Sculpture, Canadian Contemporary (1980-present)
Internationally renowned for his land art creations, Bill Vazan has spent more than 40 years investigating the human-cosmos relationship through sculpture, painting, and photography. Since the early 1980s the artist has been engraving boulders that he selects because of their specific inherent qualities. The engraved imagery he creates is a result of years of research and travel during which time Vazan examined the prehistoric symbols of many cultures, particularly those symbols painted onto or cut into stone. His interest in the very beginning of humankind, in the act of creation, is exemplified by Outline. In trying to recapture or regenerate that power, Outline becomes almost a sacred spirit making us aware of our connection to the earth and time.
