Sculpture, Canadian Contemporary (1980-present)
Purifier is composed of a classical-style bronze sculpture of a German Shorthaired Pointer that is equipped with a functioning air purifier. The idea for this sculpture transpired when the artist, Chris Cooper, was visiting Florence, Italy. While taking a break sitting on a curb, she was overcome by the exhaust fumes emitted by the passing motor vehicles. Cooper was struck by how a city could be so beautiful and yet so polluted. Her attention turned to the stray dogs that live in this environment known for its architecture, art, and literature. Purifier represents an evolutionary hybrid, a future consequence of humankind’s domination over the natural world.
