This vibrant still life of red carnations in a green vase demonstrates the wonderful naive expressionism which highlights Wood’s short painting career. There is freshness to this simple work, both in the ready application of paint and the straightforward rendering of the subject. Its intimate scale provides a heightened sense of immediacy for the viewer. Born in London, Wood travelled to Paris to study painting, moving in the circles of Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, and absorbing elements of Cubism and Fauvism in his work. He moved back to London in 1926 and joined the 7 & 5 Society, but he returned to Paris several times, and spent considerable time in Tréboul, a port town in Brittany. Wood suffered from a severe addiction to opium, and committed suicide at the age of 29.
