WAG Announces Restructuring
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is undertaking a restructuring of its staff to better align the organization as it moves into capital campaign mode and approaches its 100th anniversary next year. The restructuring will see a streamlining of the organization with the purpose of introducing and improving efficiencies across departments.
Meetings with the union regarding the restructuring were held several weeks prior to an invitation to staff to take advantage of a buy-out package. Two long-time employees serving in the Gallery Shop and Museum Services departments accepted the offer of buy-out packages. Two additional layoffs, effective immediately, are being made in the area of Engineering and Facility Rentals.
“The restructuring of our staff is in the long-term best interests of the WAG, its membership, and all stakeholders,” says Director Stephen Borys. “Our process was to invite input from all staff, and as a result, today’s announcement was not a surprise to our staff who were aware that a combination of buy-outs and layoffs were being offered. With this restructuring, we were seeking a reduction of eight percent in the full- and part-time staff complement, and this was achieved. As these positions are not in the service sector, we do not anticipate any service disruption to the public.”
Approaching its centenary in 2012, the WAG is Canada¹s oldest civic art gallery and Manitoba¹s leading visual arts institution. With a collection of over 24,000 objects spanning many centuries and cultures ¬ including the world¹s largest collection of contemporary Inuit art ¬ the WAG is constantly moving between the historical and the contemporary in an effort to engage a growing public with the power of art in our lives.
