Students draw inspiration from 100 Masters at WAG Painting, drawing classes offer intimate look at greatest works of art
WINNIPEG, April 29, 2013: Rembrandt, Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso. The Winnipeg Art Gallery has never had tutors like these. In conjunction with the exhibition 100 Masters: Only in Canada the WAG Studio will be offering 8-week painting and drawing workshops that give students the opportunity to study the work of some of the greatest artists of all time.
“We’ve always had programs that have taken students into the galleries to draw,” says Michael Boss, Head of WAG Studio. “But we’ve never had so many actual pieces of such stature and diversity gathered at one time. There’s quite a lot of excitement with the instructors – it’s special work that we just don’t have the opportunity to see in Winnipeg very often.”
Painting from the Masters runs every Wednesday from May 8 to June 26, while Drawing in the Gallery from the Masters runs May 9 to June 27. Students will visit the galleries, discuss the techniques and styles represented, then work on their own pieces. Participants in Drawing in the Gallery will actually work in the exhibition itself. However, since painting is not allowed in the galleries, Painting from the Masters students will sketch in the galleries, then work from these sketches in the WAG studio.
Information and registration for all WAG art classes is available at wag.ca/learn/programs or by calling (204) 789-1766.
“If you’re coming to the gallery as a visitor, you don’t look at the art in the same way,” says Boss. “For students spending an intensive time studying the work, drawing from it, painting from it, they begin to understand the artists’ choice, the work and the artists themselves on a whole different level.”
BMO is the presenting sponsor for 100 Masters: Only in Canada.
