Don McCullin’s Photographs Capture the Gritty Realities of Life in WAG Exhibition
Winnipeg, MB, October 16, 2013: Homeless people in London. Shell-shocked soldiers in Cyprus. The Irish “Troubles.” Don McCullin is an unflinching photojournalist best known for his coverage of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones. An exhibition of his work opens at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on November 1, continuing until January 11.
The exhibition consists of approximately 135 black-and-white works drawn from several collections, including works from all his major series: portraits of the poor and homeless in London and northern England (1040s to 1970s); the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961); war and famine in Cyprus, Biafra, the Congo, Lebanon, Vietnam, and Cambodia (1963-1991); travel photography in India (1989-91); and landscapes in Somerset, England, and northern France (1986-2000). Also included are films and interviews with McCullin, and magazines and contact prints relating to past assignments.
“McCullin’s battlefield photos belong to a tradition of war art practised by Francisco de Goya, Otto Dix, Robert Capa, and others who sought to communicate in images the horrors of human conflict,” says Stephen Borys, Director & CEO. “They are particularly compelling for their narrative depth, sombre lighting, and powerful compositions.”
Late in his career, haunted by nightmares, McCullin turned his lens on the peaceful English countryside, the landscape of Arthurian myth. These ethereal Somerset landscapes are also included in the exhibition.
Don McCullin: A Retrospective is curated by Ann Thomas, Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Canada. The exhibition is organized and circulated by the NGC.
