WAG Offers Talk on Cuban Art
Jason Yaremko, professor of Cultural History of the Americas at the University of Winnipeg, will present a talk on Everything within the Revolution: Culture, Creativity, and the State in Cuba, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on Thursday, November 12 at 7pm. It is included with Gallery admission.
The talk is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection which is on view at the WAG until January 10. There will also be 2pm exhibition tours of the exhibition on Sunday November 15 and 29.
“Cuban artists have long been engaged with the political and social history of their country, but this is not necessarily a history with which many Canadians are familiar,” according to Anna Wiebe, WAG Associate Art Educator. “As a result, much of the critical subject matter of the artworks included in the exhibition Cuba Avant-Garde remains obscure. Professor Yaremko will contextualize information on the intersections of culture, creativity, and the state in post-revolutionary Cuba.”
Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection features rarely exhibited works, some never before seen outside Cuba. The works presented here were selected from the extensive collection of Howard and Patricia Farber of New York and Miami Beach. The exhibition is originated by the Samuel P. Harn Museum at the University of Florida and is toured by Curatorial Assistance, Pasadena, California. It is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. Media sponsor: 102.3 CLEAR FM.
