The handle is slightly bracketed and tapers. It ends by curling under itself, terminating in two leaves with berries interspersed. The form of the ladle is very organic and natural. The quality of workmanship and individuality fits with the Arts and Crafts movement, and the naturalistic elements with the Art Nouveau period - both styles which influenced Jensen. The ladle is fully marked and stamped as follows: 1922, Copenhagen Assay Master C.F. Heise, 925.S. Imported by George Stockwell and reassayed in London in 1933. Also marked is '141' which may refer to pattern number. Further research needed to identify designer. (per Helen Delacretaz, Curator of Decorative Arts)

Made in 1934, the sauce boat raises from a restrained, pedestal base (8 slight brackets with two vertical bands at each joint, surmounted by a bead) to a compressed globular base. The base has diagonal bands of cusped decoration and some flattened beads. From the base swells the boat, comprised of flowing, curved lines. The rim profile is serpentine. The thumbpiece and spout are continuous with the curved form. The upswept thumbpiece terminates in a double scroll handle, each end concluding in leaf details. Like the ladle (#2000-11), the sauce boat is consistent with both the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles. The hammered surface is less evident on the sauce boat, indicative perhaps of greater mechanical production or over cleaning. The sauce boat is fully marked as follows: 1934, Copenhagen Assay Master J. Sigsgaarde, 925.5. Also marked '177A' which may refer to pattern number. Further research needed to identify designer. (per Helen Delacretaz, Curator of Decorative Arts)

The shoulders feature festoons with applied cast cherub masks which are interspersed with linear swags/bows with suspended diadems. On either side of each ware are large, oval cartouches, one of which carries a full honorary inscription (coffee pot and teapot) or initials (JH) (cream jug and sugar vase). Bands of beading decorate the upper rims of the vessels and their pedestal feet. Acanthus leaves decorate the hinged dome covers of the pots and the feet of all wares. Cast pineapple finials resting on leaf plaques are screwed through the covers and fastened with a wing bolt. Swan neck spouts terminate in acanthus leaf mounts as do the scroll handles. The vessels follow neo-classical form. The amphora-shaped coffee pot and the helmet-shaped cream jug directly reference classical antiquity. The density of decoration in the Victorian manner, however, overwhelms the simple shapes of the vessels. The service originally included a fifth piece, a serving tray, which has been lost.

The finial to the cover is in the form of an acorn. The finial to the pouring tap is ivory. Swag decoration is dependent from patterae and tassels, and enhances the areas of foot, main body, neck and cover. The pouring tap, and the typical neo-classical upswept handles are in beaded design. The inscription is engraved within an oval-shaped border of laurel leaf, linked on either side to the swag by leaf tendrils.

Teapot
Heavily cased and cast teapot with a decorative design relying mainly on acanthus leaf forms. Handle is in the form of a snake; with ivory insulators. Oval shield areas are empty and have no engraved crest or initials. The finial is rather a contrast, having marine motifs and its flatness is in variance to the form of the teapot. From the George IV period with Regency influences. Chasing is the decoration of silver by the use of punches, removing no silver in the process. Casting is a method of producing small parts, eg. feet, handles etc. by pouring molten silver into a mould.(per Kathleen Campbell, Curator Emerita)
Apple corer
Cylindrical shape comprising two sections, joined by screwing one within the other. When taken apart the inner section is reversed and reattached, thus becoming the corer: it. handle, screw area and corer. The handle marks are rubbed but interior marks on the blade of the corer are clear: full set of five marks.(per Kathleen Campbell, Curator Emerita)
Cheese scoop
Cheese scoop with a sliding pusher mechanism. Fully hallmarked on reverse of scoop. Cheese scoops such as this were generally used when a wheel of cheese was being offered.(per Kathleen Campbell, Curator Emerita)
Mote spoon
Bowl pierced in scroll pattern with rat-tail stem terminating in a spearhead finial. The hallmarks are rubbed and cannot be read which is always a problem on slender stems and not to be considered detrimental to the acquisition. A mote spoon is associated with the serving of tea.It is assumed that the spoon was used to skim tea leaves or “motes” from the surface of tea after it had been poured into the cup. It has been suggested that the finial could have been used to free the teapot spout of clogged tea leaves. Information on usage continues to be vague.(per Kathleen Campbell, Curator Emerita)
Marrow scoop
The accepted long, slender form associated with a marrow scoop, one groove being narrower than the other to accomodate various sizes of bone. Engraved crest at base of the narrow scoop. Engraved initials on reverse of larger scoop: JAR with slight mantling. Marks rubbed. Lion passant just decipherable. The marrow scoop was originally a variation of the bowl of a spoon moulded into a long narrow groove, which enabled the user to reach into theinside of a bone in order to extract the marrow, which was considered a delicacy.(per Kathleen Campbell, Curator Emerita)
Nutmeg grater
Ovoid shape with interior grater, the two sections unscrew. The nutmeg is stored in the lower (larger) section, accessible by lifting the grater. Ribbing visible on exterior at screw junction. Marks include a Lion passant, Leopard’s head crowned, date letter and maker’s mark struck on the interior of the upper section. Only the Lion passant is at the interior of the lower section. These were small containers to be carried in the pocket, containing a nutmeg, which could be grated over food for additional flavour. Popular during the 18th century, their use was carried over in to the first part of the Victorian era. During the 18th century, spices from the East were in great favour. Nutmeg graters were made in a variety of forms but all served the same purpose.(per Kathleen Campbell, Curator Emerita)
Porringer
An early Charles II (Restoration) two-handled porringer, featuring embossed floral decoration around the body (including a tulip), cast scroll handles, original pricked initials A IM placed below the rim. Hallmarked for London 1667, maker's mark I G with mullet mark below, contained in a heart-shaped punch. The maker's mark was entered in 1660. All marks are clearly punched. The porringer, a vessel used for soup or gruel, is a rare example of English silver. The workmanship and design are good. Although the porringer is English, the inspiration is Dutch. Dutch silversmiths used a light guage silver to raise a pattern in relief; English silversmiths followed the same technique and guage to create their own version of Dutch design.
Presentation salver, carrying case
The rim is cast in high relief, decoration comprising scroll and foliate designs, embellished with three beavers and areas of pierced cross-hatching with flowerhead motif. A crest is centred on the rim so as to surmount the central inscription. A view of Québec harbour, with the city rising in background is engraved on the salver. The view is similar to one of Québec in W.H. Bartlett's Canadian Scenery, Vols. I & II, published by Virtue & Co., London, in 1842. It also owes something to A General View of Québec from Point Levy, a drawing by Richard Short, published London, 1761. It would appear to be a composite illustration. Both inscription and view are surrounded with engravings emblematic of Rear-Admiral Boxer's naval career. Adjacent, and surrounding, are engraved testimonies from: (a) The Merchants and Citizens of Québec (b) Extract from a letter written by the Hon. Henry Black, Judge of the Admiralty Court of Québec (c) Extract from an address presented by The Corporation of Québec (d) Extract from the Minutes of the Board of Trade of the City of Québec The salver has its original wooden carrying case.
Hot Water jug
Neo-classical design. Urn-shaped form on spreading circular foot. The body repoussé and chased, with beaded borders, paterae and drapery swags. The upper part of the body encased with concave flutes, providing both a perceived height and slenderizing effect to the work. The handle is insulated with wicker binding.
Sugar castor
The main body and finial in baluster form, with a domed and pierced cover. The base of the cover and the foot of the caster have bands of reeded decoration.
Cake basket
Circular and widely fluted form, on spreading foot, with gadrooned foliate and shell border. Swing handle with additional floral decoration.
Plate
Cinquefoil border and gadrooned rim, and engraved crest (unidentified). Decoration on plates is confined to borders and shapes.
Argyle
The argyle is a double-walled vessel to hold gravy. The inner compartment contains the gravy, the outer and surrounding compartment hold hot water to keep the gravy hot. The wooden handle, a non-conductor of heat, ensures easy handling. Water enters through a covered pouring lip located opposite the spout.
Tea caddy
Cylindrical form, with applied borders to cover copper-showing edges. Correspondingly cylindrical slip-on cover with letter "C" engraved through to the copper. Usually it was the custom to cut out areas of Sheffield plate and insert a "let-in shield" of silver to receive the engraving, and thus eliminate exposing the copper. In this case the method is useful in illustrating the process of Sheffield.
Entrée dish
The entreé dish is comprised of three parts, and a removable handle. The lower compartment holds hot water, which is poured through perforations in an inner floor. The perforations allow both the water to enter and the heat to rise. The entreé in the dish above is thus kept hot. When the centre handle is removed, the cover may be inverted to provide an additional serving dish. Cast and applied feet, and border decoration to cover copper edges. The handle is also cast. Ornamentation is in the Rococo-style.
Inkstand
Rectangular-shaped stand. The applied border and feet are of a plated base - metal alloy. Two cut-glass bottles with slip-on covers: one a pen holder (cover has three holes), the other an ink holder (cover has one hole), together with a Sheffield Plate candle holder. Sheffield Plate is constructed of copper rolled between, and fused with, sheets of silver. An inexpensive substitute for solid silver. Sheffield plate is usually unmarked but this example has the impressed star marks of Matthew Boulton.
Salt spoon
Shell-back bowl. Shaped rim, the stem with Onslow terminal. A small but fine example from Hester Bateman; a silversmith whose workmanship was always exceptional. The spoons are well balanced, and the detailing crisply executed.
Miniature marrow spoon
Although in miniature form, the marrow spoon has the accepted long, slender stem associated with full-sized examples, and with the necessary groove for extracting marrow from within the bone. The donor has suggested that the miniature version might have been used for game birds - an idea that would require research - perhaps rabbit or hare would be more likely. The hallmark is indistinct as assay was probably done before the final finishing process. On marrow spoons/scoops the marks are often semi-obliterated in this manner.
Mote spoon
The bowl is pierced in a repeating-X pattern centered between foliate motifs. The rat-tail stem terminates in a spearhead finial.
Suckett spoon
Slender shafted narrow-bowled spoon with three-pronged fork at the other end. Simple and undecorated. The fork has good weight and is, for its size, a substantial piece of table silver. A suckett spoon was intended for use with fruit, either candied or preserved in syrup.
Toddy ladle
Oval-shaped bowl, with hallmarks punched in centre area, the twisted whale-bone section inserted in the tapering shank and capped with a silver ferrule. There is a reinforcing disk at the junction of handle and bowl. One of the whale-bone sections is less twisted than the other; this is not of concern. Each ladle probably started out singularly and eventually came together as a pair.
Soup spoon
The bowl is the long oval form associated with 18th century soup spoons of this period. The reverse shows a single drop with shell design. The mid-rib stem is Hanoverian.
Sugar tongs
Although less elaborately scrolled than some examples, the sugar tongs, sometimes called sugar nippers, are an elegant addition to the silver tea equipage of the 18th century. They are of scissor-like construction with a flat circular disk. The reverse is left plain, and the disk does not contain a spring device. The sugar grips are of hollowed-out shell form.
Inkstand
The main body of the inkstand is hemispherical with an applied band of decoration. The band is of pierced design with two reeded threads twisted to form repeating ovals. In some places the band has been either damaged during application or mis-cast. The join is not perfect. The damaged or mis-cast areas in the band should not affect the aesthetic or historical value of the work. Errors or miscalculation during the process of manufacture are not considered detrimental, and the inkstand is in the same condition as when sold. The inkstand is supported on three ball and bead feet. The hinged and domed cover, and glass inkwell, are set in a widely-flaring rim and surrounded by six vertical supports applied under the rim to the main body. The surface has a manner-mark surface.
Napkin ring
The napkin ring is of waisted or spool form, with rolled over rims. A raised pattern of a branch with leaves and berries encircles the ring at mid-point. The surface has a hammer-mark finish. The ring has been created from a flat sheet of silver, the ends joined together in the circular or ring form.
Napkin ring
The napkin rings are of waisted or spool form, with rolled over rims. A raised design of a Celtic-inspired Tudor Rose with entwined branch and leaf on either side, decorate the rings. The surfaces have a hammer-mark finish. The rings have been created from a flat sheet of silver, the ends joined together in the circular or ring form. The rose may have been intended as the emblem of England.
Bowl
The circular bowl stands on a low spreading foot. A decorative border outlines the rim and incorporates two Tudor Roses which serve as handles, one on either side. The band is of pierced design, with two reeded threads twisted to form repeating ovals. The surface has a hammer-mark finish.
Fruit bowl
Bowl on stepped base. Exterior base of bowl features leaf patterns, from two of which spring two vines (wire) each. Each of the four vines culminate in a grape cluster at edge of bowl. The finish has a faceted appearance to the surface.
Bonbonnière
From a raised, circular base springs four corn ear motifs which attach to baluster-shaped stem. Above junction of corn motifs to stem, the stem becomes four leaves which attach to organic-shaped bowl. Open handle arcs over top bowl terminating in corn ear motif. The finish has a faceted appearance to the surface.
Serving spoon, fork
Slightly waisted, three-prong fork and teardrop-shaped spoon with dolphin motif at juncture of handle and bowl/fork. The finish has a faceted appearance to the surface.
Sauce boat on stand
Each boat-shaped sauceboat is supported on three hoof feet. A winged sphinx mask is applied below both the spout and the handle. The sides are applied with winged sun-disks, each disk flanked by uraei. Beside the handle on either side is a winged sea lion. The handle is formed with a double coiled serpent, the body terminating in a hound's head. The covers are shallow-domed, with bud finials rising from a circle of palm leaves. The oval stands are engraved with crests and coronets, each supported on three lion mask and paw feet. The crest, coronet and motto are those of Thomas Douglas, fifth Earl of Selkirk (1771-1820) succeeded to the title in 1799.
Mustard pot, spoon
Flat based bowl with vertical collar rim, and original spoon. Engraved design in the style of the Aesthetic Movement, a Japanese form of ornament in vogue during the latter part of the 19th century. The bamboo and bird decoration is engraved against a matted ground, which gives an effective contrast. Geometric motifs were often incorporated into the designs, and in this instance are shown on the handle of the mustard spoon.
Sugar basket
Pedestal basket, with swing handle and original blue glass liner, used for sugar although the possibility of it being a cream pail could be considered. The handle is formed in an alternating plain and twisted rope design. The foot and bowl rims have applied and strengthened bands of beading, particularly useful at the bowl rim to take the stress of the swing handle. The stepped foot and the main body are pierced in geometric linear, circle and oval patterns and incorporate two bands of slight dot-and-oval engraving. A small oval for engraved initials on crest is left vacant. The deep blue glass liner effectively reveals the pierced work.
Argyle
The argyle has an applied, dentiled band at the base and at the rim, and a slender, swan's neck pouring spout with access to the inner partition. The handle has substantial mounts: the upper one with a U-shaped, hinged cover over the access opening for the hot water. The separate, and high-domed argyle cover has an urn-shaped finial.
Caddy spoon
The spoon has a shell-shaped bowl, and a handle bordered with wriggle work, lined with two rows of linear pattern similar to dentiled design. An engraved and stylized star motif and engraved initials "JS". Many caddy spoons follow the form of a shell, or have shell decoration. Escallop shells were included in the tea chests shipped from China, to be used as scoops to lade out the tea.
Ladle
Plain, substantial ladle of generous proportions, the handle in Old English pattern, the bowl of oval form.
Caddy spoon
Unusual shaped bowl with a slightly raised, and defined centre area and rising, rounded sides, both parts cut away at the handle junction in open U-shapes. The rim of the bowl comprises a scalloped border of tiny lozenge-shaped perforations. The bowl is engraved in leaf and punch work designs. The handle is ornate with scrolls, shield (empty), reeded border, and a version of the Kings pattern as terminal.
Marrow scoop
A double-ended utensil for extracting marrow from a bone, made from a single rod of silver, the ends being expanded. One end into a narrow, elongated bowl with straight parallel sides and rounded end, the other scoop even narrower - more like a deep, concave flute. The different widths obviously for large and small bones.
Egg Cup
Restrained decoration composed of simple raised banding. Simple, fluid profile. Impressed roaring lion near lip on one side.
Écuelle
Écuelles are broad, shallow bowls with domed covers typical of 17th and 18th century manufacture (silver and ceramic) for the service of soup. It is not uncommon, such as with this work, for the lid and bowl to have become separated. Two handles or ‘ears’ negated the need for a spoon, as one would pick the vessel up by the ‘ears’ and bring to the lips to ingest the soup. Characteristic of French silver, the nearest English complement would be the deeper 17th century porringer. This écuelle follows the characteristic shape and form. It is refined and elegant with wonderful splayed foliate ears.
Cheese scoop
Ivory, ribbed handle with cheese ‘shovel’ scoop on end with lion crest engraving
Fish slice
The fish slice has a conforming, smaller, hinged blade. Pered and engraved decoration
Spoon
The bowl has enamel, foliate scrolls shaded in turquoise, green and yellow bordered by red beading. The stem has large, yellow/red flowers leading to a twist handle and foliate terminal.
