Harlan House’s vessels are the quintessential definition of grace. Dedicating himself to porcelain as a medium, House has focused on producing a distinctive line of functional wares—largely for the display of flowers or service of food—that are timeless, beautifully proportioned, and elegant. Although he started art school in the 1960s to pursue painting, it is for his ceramics that he is held in such high regard, having won the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in Fine Craft and the Jean A. Chalmers National Crafts Award. This vase in the WAG’s collection clearly exhibits House’s interest in Chinese ceramics, particularly the refined Song Dynasty (960–1279) in both form and decoration. Pure in its simplicity, it is decorated solely with a crackle glaze in the most subtle shade of celadon.
