Sculpture, Canadian Modern (1910-1979)

Arriving from Romania, via Israel, in the early 1960s, sculptor and painter Sorel Etrog was part of a contingent of European artists that immigrated to Canada after World War II. Many of Etrog’s sculptures from the 1960s, such as Mother and Child, are hybrid structures composed of multiple figures merged into a single form, employing biomorphic and industrial shapes. There is anguish in the link Etrog establishes between the vital human body and the twisted knot of metal emerging from a soaring pillar, reflecting both the artist’s traumatic childhood and his abiding concern for human freedom.
