One of the most successful Irish landscape painters of his day, George Mullins began his artistic career as a painter of snuff boxes at a Waterford factory. He later migrated to easel painting, and exhibited with the Society of Artists in Dublin and the Royal Academy in London. During his short life, Mullins received special acclaim for his Italianate landscape paintings, which were highly esteemed for their atmospheric effects, superb tone, and delicate colour in the manner of Claude Lorrain. This evocative wooded landscape, inhabited by anglers and other figures situated before a ruined tower, may have been part of a series showing contrasting weather and the times of day, similar to his commission for the Earl of Charlemont in the late 1760s.
