Shawna Dempsey to Read “Bedtime Stories” in WAG Exhibition

Bedtime stories aren’t just for kids! Certainly not when they are told by performance artist Shawna Dempsey as she reads from the very adult book Bedtime Stories for the Edge of the World at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The readings spin a tale of North American history as you’ve never imagined and will send you off to bed with new dreams. They will take place at 8:30 pm on Friday, November 2 and 16 and December 7 and are included with Gallery admission.

Bedtime Stories for the Edge of the World was written by performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan as part of the WAG exhibition Winnipeg Now which features the work of 13 of Winnipeg’s most creative  artists.

“The stories were inspired by mythic notions of the North American ‘frontier’—yarns and fables belonging to cowboys and Horatio Algers,” says Dempsey. “But our interest was in the women of the ‘New World.’ So our tales follow pirate queens, inventrixes, sideshow performers, plucky spinsters, religious zealots, and office workers. Through them we are looking at ideas that shape North American’s notion of itself and its dreams for the future.”

Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan have collaborated on performances, films, videos, publications and public art projects since 1989. Their provocative, humorous, feminist performance art pieces have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan, and their art video and film works have been screened in venues ranging from women’s centres in Sri Lanka to the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.  As WAG guest curators from 2006 to 2008, they curated three significant group exhibitions--Supernovas, In The Blink of An Eye, and Subconscious City. Performance artifacts, films, and videos by Dempsey and Millan are held in collections including the Winnipeg Art Gallery, National Gallery of Canada, Regina Public Libraries, Planned Parenthood USA, American Indian Reservation Centre, and colleges and universities throughout North America.
