WAG Brings SKYBOX Warming Hut to Memorial Boulevard for a Chance to Win
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is pleased to present SKYBOX warming hut on its exterior rampway facing Memorial Boulevard. Those who enjoyed last winter’s Red River Mutual Skating Trail at The Forks will recall SKYBOX as one of the six featured warming huts that dotted the trail, warmed skaters, and playfully engaged the public with architecture. While SKYBOX is at the WAG, the community is invited to take selfies inside the warming hut and post on social media with the hashtag #SKYBOXWPG for a chance to win a WAG prize pack.
Designed by third-year University of Manitoba architecture students Matt Hagen, Ryan Lewis, and Evan Taylor, SKYBOX aims to reflect the Prairie sky with the use of reflective materials. It creates the visual immersion of people against a background not normally considered, the sky.
“SKYBOX meshes the transforming weather conditions and the community,” comments WAG Director & CEO Dr. Stephen Borys. “It was my favourite warming hut at The Forks this winter and now it is available for everyone to enjoy during the summer months.”
Purposefully placed reflective material—polished aluminum—covers the interior space to procure an illusion of the visitors sitting amongst the changing seasonal skies. The exterior of the work consists of charred, interlocking cedar boards, selected to visually juxtapose the exterior with the light-filled interior.
“This collaboration with the WAG gives SKYBOX a second-life outside The Forks Red River Mutual Skating Trail,” explains Hagen, Taylor, and Lewis. “By combining a renowned Winnipeg location - the WAG - with a socially-engaging piece of temporary architecture, we are creating an exciting opportunity to interact with the downtown streetscape.”
SKYBOX embraces social media by creating a photographic opportunity with the changing skies. By posting selfies to Twitter with the tagline #SKYBOXWPG, the community can engage with the project on an international scale, and be entered to win a WAG prize pack. A random draw of all SKYBOX selfies taken at the WAG will happen on September 3, 2014.
The warming hut was one of six chosen for the The Forks Red River Mutual Trail this past winter in the annual competition, Warming Huts v.2014: An Art + Architecture Competition on Ice. This competition, endorsed by the Manitoba Association of Architects, invited architects from all over the world to submit proposals for warming huts.
This presentation of SKYBOX has been made possible through the combined efforts of the WAG, the Forks Renewal Corporation, and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture.
