Winnipeg Art Gallery Posts Another Surplus Year

 At the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Annual General Meeting held on September 23, Board President Naomi Z. Levine announced that the Gallery had a successful year posting a surplus of $4,347.

The surplus means the WAG will be able to continue to benefit from the Arts Stabilization Manitoba program says Levine. “There are many reasons accounting for the surplus. We presented a wide variety of exhibitions that appealed to many diverse audiences. The innovative programs developed by WAG staff in support of these exhibitions offer our visitors the opportunity to interact with the art on a more enhanced level. The Board of Governors has had a heightened focus on fundraising this past year which is continuing into our current fiscal year.”

Levine discussed the Gallery’s annual President’s Appeal campaign which this year hopes to raise $100,000 for the restoration and preservation of works from the WAG’s collection. For the next three years, three of the WAG’s exhibition galleries will be dedicated to rotating exhibitions drawn exclusively from the permanent collection.

Levine also spoke on the difficulties of fundraising for the arts in a time of recession and thanked the Gallery’s funders, donors, and members for their continued support.

Completing his first full year as WAG Director, Dr. Stephen Borys stated that he was “thrilled with how much we accomplished…with an outstanding staff, hardworking volunteers, a dedicated Board, and a loyal and growing membership.” He highlighted the $2 million grant from the Government of Manitoba’s Department of Culture, Heritage, Tourism, and Sport for the restoration of the WAG’s rooftop sculpture garden, returning it to its original design as envisioned by the architect, Gustavo da Roza.

Borys spoke about ways in which the WAG is revitalizing the Gallery’s image and presence such as the creation of a visitor experience committee which examined all aspects of a WAG visit from the moment first setting foot in the door. The WAG also did the legwork for the development of a new brand and website which was introduced this past summer.

Both Levine and Borys referred to an upcoming Capital Campaign as well as to plans for the celebration of the Gallery’s centenary in 2012.
