Born in Antwerp in 1662, Jan Frans van Bloemen was one of three brothers to study in Italy as members of the Schildersbent, the confraternity of Dutch and Flemish artists active in Rome. Greatly inspired by the pastoral landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, van Bloemen dedicated much of his work to documenting the Roman landscape, producing idealized views of the Roman Campagna. He earned the nickname Orizzonte (Horizon) and was celebrated for his sensitive rendering of light and colour as well as his delicate brushwork. Van Bloemen managed to maintain an active circle of patrons and supporters in Rome, remaining in the city from 1688 until his death in 1749.
