Qarliksaq began making drawings shortly after moving into Baker Lake in 1970. A crafts program had been initiated the previous year by the Canadian federal government to provide employment. As a result, the first annual print collection was published in 1970. In several of Qarliksaq’s drawings groups of animals or human figures are arranged in rows. In the WAG work, which depicts a herd of caribou, the animals are all viewed frontally. Each caribou is individualized, but the repetition of the forms and the graceful curves of the antlers unites the herd visually. Gentle rhythms created by the curving lines express the slow mass movement of a grazing herd.
