Scenes of violence perpetrated by bizarre, cannibal-like creatures are among the favourite subjects in the work of Baker Lake artist Nancy Pukingrnak Aupaluktuq. This is the original drawing for a print that was published by Sanavik Co-operative Association Limited in 1986. In the print catalogue for that year, the artist explained that these are “…magic people, or the shamans, who in performing grow long walrus teeth. The green bodies indicate their nakedness. The woman in the centre is being held captive while the man at the bottom centre is trying to retrieve her.” The artist added that these strange creatures come from her own artistic imagination, rather than from traditional Inuit legends, and she has made a number of stone carvings of these same two-faced monsters.
