Sponsored Programs
MPA’S Martha Street Studio regularly presents workshops that highlight a range of printmaking techniques in partnership with WAG Studio Programs. These are often related to specific exhibitions on display at the WAG. Aside from having the opportunity to work in a top-notch facility under the guidance of a professional printmaker, participants tour the WAG exhibitions as a group with their workshop instructor.
Manitoba Printmakers Association
Since 2002 PrairieView has offered enormously popular beginning photography classes in partnership with WAG Studio Programs. These courses provide the gateway into a state-of-the art facility and a wide range of other photo-based programs taught by practicing professionals.
PrairieView School of Photography
Since 1999 Boeing Canada Technology has sponsored art classes each spring for students from the Manitoba School for the Deaf. A reception and exhibition of student work is held in the Studio Building in June each year.
Sign for Art
Our annual exhibition of children’s artwork is held in the Gallery each spring. Great-West Life Assurance Company has sponsored this celebration of our students’ creative expressions for well over a decade. The exhibition, which showcases the work of approximately 800 young artists, is also supported each year by the Volunteer Associates of The Winnipeg Art Gallery and Winnipeg School Division. In 2009 Leon A. Brown Limited also provided support for the exhibition.
Through the Eyes of a Child
The Volunteer Associates are long-time supporters of art education at the WAG. Aside from the support they provide for Through the Eyes of a Child, they also fund the Volunteer Associates’ Scholarship Program that awards art classes to children who have shown an interest and ability in art but are financially unable to attend our programs. The Volunteer Associates also administer the Iris Gilmour Memorial Scholarship that is funded by the Gilmour family and is awarded regularly to a young Studio Programs student who has shown exceptional skill and commitment in art classes at the WAG. The award covers the tuition for a Studio Program of the student’s choice.
Volunteer Associates of the Winnipeg Art Gallery
WAG Studio Programs has a longstanding (since 1937) relationship with Winnipeg School Division. Each year approximately 400 students from WSD study art in the programs sponsored by the Division: Saturday Morning Art Classes, Special Art Classes, Quantum, High School Drawing, and Sunday Afternoon Art Classes. Examples of work from these students is featured in our annual children’s art exhibition Through the Eyes of a Child.
Winnipeg School Division
Since July 2006 WAG Studio Programs and The Winnipeg Folk Festival have been partners in presenting the Young Artists Program for teens age 14 to 18 years. The program provides emerging artists with an opportunity to work with professional artists/mentors to design and produce artwork in the Studio Building and on site at the Bird’s Hill Park. A lively display of their efforts is installed at the Folk Festival and enjoyed by thousands of visitors each July.
