WAG’s Birchwood BMW Art & Soul: One Hundred Celebrates a Century of Heroes, Sins, and Has-beens on February 23

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is letting the clock run wild on February 23 for Birchwood BMW Art & Soul: One Hundred. Celebrating the most memorable moments, iconic personalities, and scandalous events of the past century, the theme of this year’s annual fundraiser honours the WAG’s 100th anniversary.

Have a cocktail with Andy Warhol, let your hair down with Nicki Minaj, and keep an eye out for Coco Chanel – anything is possible at this ultimate time travel party! A century of musical mashups by live DJs on all four levels is only the beginning. Each floor of the WAG will showcase an eclectic and vibrant social scene from every era of the last one hundred years. Get inspired by BMW luxury exhibits and step back in time while enjoying EQ3’s modernist lounge. Expect the unexpected, including some gems that may have slipped your mind. Alive or dead, real or fabricated, naughty or nice…be who you want to be for one unforgettable night!

“Engaging our community is what the WAG is all about, particularly during our Centennial year,” says the Gallery’s Executive Director Stephen Borys. “Art & Soul draws hundreds of people each year, offering some visitors their first taste of a gallery experience.  This is a fabulous opportunity to be introduced to all the WAG has to offer, get creative, and meet new people.”

Birchwood BMW Art & Soul: One Hundred, hosted from 8:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. at the WAG, is guaranteed to surprise and delight. Featuring interactive experiences, live entertainment, access to art exhibitions, themes and music on every floor, costumes, exquisite beverages, and more, Art & Soul 2013 will once again be the winter encounter of the year!

“Birchwood BMW Art & Soul: One Hundred will attract an irresistible mix of characters dating from 1912 straight through to today. With all proceeds supporting the WAG, this unique party is a chance to pay homage to your idol or favourite decade, while taking in live local talent and décor genius,” says Jennifer Nixon, Co-Chair of the Art & Soul 2013 committee. “From the mod squad and notorious rappers to famous politicians and silver screen divas – we’re celebrating a century of heroes, sins, and has-beens!”

After the past two sell out successes of 2012 Birchwood BMW Art & Soul: Après Ski and 2011 Birchwood MINI Art & Soul: London Calling, tickets to Art & Soul 2013 are expected to go quickly. Tickets are $50 each (or 10 for $450) and are on sale now at artandsoul.wag.ca. Take advantage of this year’s special offer: present your ticket stub at the WAG front desk for a 25% discount off a WAG membership (some restrictions apply). Stay in the loop with news and announcements from Art & Soul on Facebook and Twitter.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is known internationally as the home of the largest collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world, which it has been collecting since 1957. It is only fitting, therefore, that the WAG celebrates this wonderful collection during its Centennial year. Creation & Transformation: Defining Moments in Inuit Art will have a free public opening at 7pm, Friday, January 25. It will continue on view until April 14. For more information visit wag.ca.
