100 Masters Most Successful Exhibition in WAG History
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is celebrating the spectacular success of the 100 Masters: Only in Canada exhibition which closed September 2 after a 115-day run. With an overall attendance of over 60,000 visitors, it is the best-attended exhibition in the WAG’s 100-year history.
“We knew the exhibition would be popular,” says WAG Director Stephen Borys, “but it succeeded far beyond our wildest expectations. The show had the strongest opening in the WAG’s history, and that momentum just continued to build resulting in a hold-over of the show for an extra two weeks. By the final weekend, visitors who had been away over the summer, and those who wanted to see it one more time, just poured in. It was incredibly exciting. Not only did 100 Masters: Only in Canada set a new WAG attendance record with over 60,000 visitors, the exhibition set several other records including the highest sponsor support, program delivery, school outreach, and membership growth.”
Borys regards the success of the exhibition as a sign that the WAG is becoming increasingly relevant to people. “When the Norman Rockwell exhibition hit 30,000 visitors, we knew we were connecting in a new way with our community. And when 100 Masters saw those numbers double, we believe it truly confirmed that the WAG is playing an important role in our city and province.”
He adds that what gave him the greatest pleasure “was seeing people from every neighbourhood in our city (not to mention visitors from across the province, Canada, the U.S. and from various parts of the world) coming to the WAG to see this historic exhibition. With this kind of local, regional, and national engagement, the Gallery’s mission is clearly relevant and working. Now that’s a wonderful 100th birthday gift!”
