In the Strata series, Daniel Crichton uses the medium of glass to investigate the earth’s formation and the natural forces that contributed to its creation. The WAG’s vase evolved from eroding layers of coloured glass to create the visual effect of stratified, geological textures. Bold use of colour, particularly the red set against green and black, creates dynamism evocative of powerful earth forces, such as generation and explosion. Crichton played an instrumental role in the studio glass movement in Canada, assuming leadership of Sheridan College of Art and Design’s glass program in 1979. Under his astute guidance, the program expanded as faculty were added and facility space was increased, garnering greater international recognition for the program. His premature death in 2002 cut short his own personal investigations into glass and the medium’s potential. However, he leaves a legacy of students and peers to continue this exploration.
