Painting, Canadian Modern (1910-1979)
Among public art galleries in Western Canada, the WAG has one of the most impressive collections of Quebec abstract painting from the mid-twentieth century. This work by Yves Gaucher echoes the scale and creative intentions of several equally monumental paintings in the WAG’s collection by peers like Guido Molinari and Claude Tousignant. Gaucher helped to forge a mode of abstract image-making based on the interaction between variously aligned bands and fields of flat, unmodulated colour. Equally concise and defined, Gaucher’s paintings are sometimes misinterpreted as austere or intellectual. In fact, his work is rooted in sensual, even spiritual, experience. Blue, Green, Ochre, Oranges and Yellows engulfs the viewer’s visual field to construct an experience of embodied self-awareness through perceptual sensation.
