Tanglewood’s panoramic perspective and stippling technique create a map-like description of a landscape. The analytical way vegetations and landforms are differentiated and described suggests the artist’s direct and holistic observation of nature. However, Ivan Eyre’s bird’s-eye view of a verdant, rolling landscape is entirely invented. The topographical details are used in this painting to suggest a subjective mood. Eyre’s painting of a concocted world that is somehow both isolated and claustrophobic is a poetic commentary on the real world. His surreal take on the imagined landscape has been highly influential on younger generations of Prairie artists.
