Presentation silver was a customary way of honouring an individual for exceptional service, whether military, civil, or heroic. This monumental salver is indicative of the esteem accorded Edward Boxer (1784–1855) during his service as Captain of the Port of Quebec. Although his naval career was of primary importance, Boxer’s presence in Quebec was also marked by his influence in matters of commerce and politics. This work is an impressive example of cast, chased, and engraved silver by the highly regarded London firm of Hunt & Roskell, which specialized in such presentation silver as well as domestic silver and jewelry. Noteworthy decorative features alluding to its Canadian significance include an engraved view of the Quebec Harbour from Pointe Levy, and cast and applied beavers emerging from the borders in high relief.
