Stanley Klengenberg represents the third generation of an artistic family from the community of Holman in the western Arctic. He was the grandson of Victor Ekootak, one of the pioneers of the Holman print program, and the son of Elsie and Patrick Akovak Klengenberg. By the mid-1980s, Klengenberg was one of the most promising graphic artists in Holman. His life was cut short by his tragic suicide in 1999. This is the artist’s best-known print, stencilled by his mother Elsie Klengenberg from an expressive, charcoal drawing. This dark, unromanticized image of a man with a gaunt, starved face is one of the most haunting works to be created by an artist in Holman.
