Mary K. Okheena began working in the Holman print shop in 1977. She had 74 of her drawings made into prints, printing 36 of them herself. She has also printed 31 drawings by other artists. The WAG work was printed from a large piece of plywood which Okheena carved herself. The artist described this print in an interview with WAG Curator Darlene Wight, in 1999: “The year I did this print, we had a lot of bears coming into the community. The men would follow the bears’ tracks to find the bears.” This stark black-and-white woodcut reveals Okheena’s skills as a designer, as a wonderful mix of negative and positive space is integrated within a complex network of line and form.
