This tapestry, commissioned by the WAG in 2006, was woven by Kawtysie Kakee, who joined the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio in 1975. She has designed over 60 tapestries and woven many others, and she created this tapestry from a drawing by the respected graphic artist Malaya Akulukjuk. The last drawings executed by Akulukjuk were landscapes made in 1993. Two years later, as a tribute to the artist, the weave studio created the 1995 Malaya Akulukjuk Special Collection of four large landscape tapestries. This included Qaqqilutuk, which is the name of a specific campsite near Bon Accord where Malaya Akulukjuk’s family spent every summer. Subtle blends of blues, mauves, and greys in the background give an atmospheric quality of infinite space and soft light.
