Robert Archambeau, 2003 recipient of the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in Fine Craft, has called Manitoba home since 1968 when he assumed a professorship in Ceramics at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art. His dedicated artistic practice and his constant re-evaluation of the vessel form have exerted considerable influence on generations of students and Manitoba ceramists. Archambeau’s approach is contemplative—intellectual in its study of form and decoration. He is a keen observer of nature, an aptitude communicated by this vase through tonal hues and surface mottling evocative of the nuanced colouration of the earth, sky, and flora. Specific placement in the wood-fired kiln has resulted in the flames and heat interacting with the vase’s surface, creating varied passages of modulated glaze that play out over the contours of the vessel.
