Join us for bi-monthly talks, videos, and tours over the lunch hour!

Coffee and tea is provided. You're welcome to bring a bag lunch if a video is being screened. If the event that day is an exhibiton tour, we suggest you come early to eat your lunch since no food is allowed in the galleries. Talks and tours are included with Gallery admission. Video programs are free.

 

Tour: Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin with Angeliki Bogiatji

Enjoy an inspiring tour of this monumental exhibition of ancient Greek and Roman art, the first of its kind in Canada! Dating from the 7th century BC to the 2nd century AD, Olympus features 160 magnificent treasures from the National Museums in Berlin classical antiquities collection including marble and bronze statues and reliefs, terracotta vases and jewellery presented through the theme of gods and goddesses.

 

Talk: Greek Mythology I: Statues & Stories with Dr. Jane Cahill

Explore Greek mythology with expert and performing storyteller, Dr. Jane Cahill as she brings several ancient statues from the Olympus exhibition to life.

 

Talk: Greek Mythology II: Every Picture Tells a Tale with Dr. Jane Cahill

Wednesday May 20 at 12pm

Learn more about Greek mythology with expert Dr. Jane Cahill as she explores ancient tales illustrated on centuries-old terracotta Greek vases from the Olympus collection.

 

Tour: NGC@ WAG: Ron Mueck with Curator, Andrew Kear

Wednesday June 3 at 12pm

Join Andrew Kear, curator of Historical Canadian Art, for a fascinating look at several works by artist Ron Mueck including his startlingly realistic and monumental sculpture of an infant entitled, A Girl from 2006 which explores the human condition and psyche.

Located just outside Rio de Janeiro, Jardim Gramacho, Brazil, is the world's largest garbage landfill. Modern artist, Vik Muniz works with the so-called catadores, the men and women who pick through the refuse, to create art out of recycled materials. Muniz selects six of the garbage pickers to pose as subjects in a series of photographs mimicking famous paintings. In his desire to assist the catadores and change their lives, Muniz finds himself changed as well.
