WAG Offers Creative Writing Workshop
What connections exist between different art forms? How do observation and interpretation of the visual arts find meaning and expression through writing? The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Write to Art: Creative Writing and the Visual Arts Workshop explores these and many other questions. The workshop will be held from 2 to 5pm on Saturday, January 29.
Write to Art is a creative writing workshop with acclaimed writers Debbie Schnitzer and Marjorie Anderson. Responding to the work of Colombian artist Fernando Botero in the exhibition The Baroque World of Fernando Botero, participants will engage new creative and interpretive strategies and go beyond simply looking.
“This workshop will encourage participants to examine how they look at, understand and interpret the visual arts by giving them space to explore their own creativity.” says WAG Art Educator Anna Wiebe. “Art gallery programming often takes a hands-off approach when it comes to interpretation. This workshop is an attempt to see what happens when we bring ‘doing’ back into the equation.”
Debbie Schnitzer is intrigued by correspondences among art forms, the biology and biography of the creative process and the way we represent and value the arts of discovery in learning cultures. She is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Winnipeg and works as an editor, writer, and activist.
Marjorie Anderson has a Ph.D. in English literature and taught writing and literature at the English Department of the University of Manitoba before moving to the Faculty of Management, where she was Director of Communication Programs. Anderson’s lifelong interest in writing and storytelling has led to her involvement in editing and teaching personal story writing. She is best known as the co-editor and later editor of the Dropped Threads books along with Carol Shields.
Registration fees are $25 for WAG members and $30 for the general public. To register, please call 789-0516. Registration deadline is January 22.
