Curator of Power Corporation Art Collection to Speak at the WAG
Paul Maréchal, Curator of the Art Collection of Power Corporation of Canada, will be speaking on Building Corporate Art Collections: The Inside Track at 7pm, Thursday, May 19 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Maréchal is also Co-Curator of the exhibition William Brymner: Artist, Teacher, Colleague which will have an official public opening at 8pm that same evening. Admission to both the talk and the opening is free.
Maréchal’s association with Power Corporation of Canada goes back to 1990 as curator, conservator, and developer of both the corporate collection and the private collection of the family of Paul Demarais Sr. Begun in 1964 by its founder, Paul Guy Demarais, the Power Corporation of Canada collection is considered one of the country’s pre-eminent art collections. The Corporation’s acquisition of works by celebrated Canadian artists has aimed to trace the development and reflect the quality and diversity of Canadian art from 1800 to 1970. Committed to bringing its collection to the attention of the public and sharing it with a larger audience, Power Corporation takes part in most major national or national or international exhibitions and retrospectives devoted to Canadian art through loans of its works, thereby supporting the leading role museums play in disseminating knowledge.
Since 1997 Maréchal has taught a course in the Fundamentals of the Art Market for the Art History Department at Université du Québec à Montréal. Long fascinated with the art of Andy Warhol, he published Andy Warhol: The Record Covers 1949-1987—Catalogue Raisonné in 2008.
Approaching its centenary in 2012, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is Canada’s oldest civic art gallery and Manitoba’s leading visual arts institution. With a collection of over 24,000 objects spanning many centuries and cultures – including the world’s largest collection of contemporary Inuit art – the WAG is constantly moving between the historical and the contemporary in an effort to engage a growing public with the power of art in our lives
